About Brass Rubbing Medieval Arts Center

Brass Rubbing Medieval Arts Center at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Long Beach offers visitors the chance to create rubbings of medieval brasses using metallic waxes on special rag paper. The center features reproductions of the 4,000 brasses that were laid in England's churches as memorials between 300 and 650 years ago, commemorating knights, their ladies, and other citizens of medieval times as well as religious icons. These brasses document the development of armor, fashion, and society across centuries. All supplies, hangers, and instruction are provided with each rubbing. Docent talks accompany all group visits, and picture matting is available for an additional nominal cost. The center also offers ready-made rubbings for sale alongside children's books about medieval times, postcards, and note cards. Church tours are available on request. Adult and youth groups may reserve visits, and an English Tea Room operates on select dates.
