The Bessie Smith Cultural Center in Chattanooga combines an African American museum with a performance hall honoring blues legend Bessie Smith. Visitors explore permanent exhibits including Walk Through Time: The Chattanooga African American Experience, which documents local African American history, and Chattanooga's Black Soundtrack, showcasing musicians and entertainers from the region. The facility opened in its current form in 1996 within the historic M.L. King Boulevard district. The center hosts rotating exhibitions alongside its permanent collections. The Bessie Smith Performance Hall within the complex serves as a venue for concerts, banquets, meetings, and community events. Group and school tours are available for parties of ten or more. The fully accessible building offers free parking. The museum charges admission and operates Tuesday through Friday.
Hours: Tue - Fri: 10am - 5pm, Sat - Mon: Closed
