The Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill displays modern, contemporary, and African art in its downtown galleries. Visitors explore rotating exhibitions such as "Care and Concern: Recent Acquisitions of Modern and Contemporary Art" and "Continental Shift: Recent Acquisitions of African Art," alongside works from the permanent collection including pieces by Archibald John Motley Jr. and a Mughal-period perforated sandstone screen. The museum offers curators' tours, Close Looks gallery programs that examine individual artworks in detail, and online resources including educational materials, 3D digital models, and recorded artist talks. Regular programming includes the Ackland Film Forum, which screens classic films in the Lumina Theater, and family days with drop-in activities. General admission is free.
