About Museum of Life and Science
The Museum of Life and Science spans 84 acres across Durham and invites visitors to explore interactive science and nature exhibits, ride the Ellerbe Creek Railway on a scale replica C.P. Huntington locomotive, and walk through Magic Wings Butterfly House, a 35-foot tall glass conservatory where hundreds of tropical butterflies inhabit a lush rainforest environment alongside more than 200 species of tropical plants. The Insectarium displays exotic insects and invertebrates from around the globe, while the Emerging Wonders window offers close-up views of the butterfly lifecycle, including chrysalises and newly emerged butterflies. The Museum hosts birthday parties, kids-only evenings, and adult workshops in specimen pinning and insect art. Durham County residents receive free admission with proof of Durham address on designated Durham Community Days, with each adult able to bring up to five children at no cost. Children ages 2 and under receive free admission.
