About The Miamisburg Mound

Miamisburg Mound is one of the two largest conical mounds in eastern North America, rising 65 feet tall with a circumference of 800 feet. Visitors climb built steps to reach the top observation platform, where they can survey views of the surrounding area and the Great Miami River valley below. The mound stands atop a 100-foot-high ridge, making it visible from several miles away. Excavations in 1869 revealed that the Adena culture built the mound in several stages between 800 B.C. and A.D. 100, with discoveries including a layer of flat stones overlapping like roof shingles at 24 feet below the surface. The mound likely served as a cemetery for multiple generations of ancient Ohioans and may have marked tribal territory boundaries. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Miamisburg Mound contains 54,000 cubic yards of earth and represents one of roughly 1,000 surviving American Indian mounds from an estimated 10,000 that once existed in the central Ohio Valley. The site is located in Miamisburg, Ohio.
