The Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead houses over 20,000 historical artifacts spanning General History, Decorative Arts, Fine and Folk Arts, Costumes and Textiles, and Natural History. Visitors explore permanent and changing exhibitions that interpret important themes in Suffolk County history. Among the most discussed artifacts is the Hulbert Flag, a controversial piece from the permanent collection believed by some to have influenced the design of the first American flag. The museum building, constructed in 1930 and expanded with wings added in 1951 and 1964, sits on a Peconic River-facing parcel in Riverhead and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. The society also maintains a research library and archives. The handicap-accessible facility includes a ground-level entrance, elevator, and restrooms. The Weathervane Book Shop offers books related to county history. Group visits can be arranged by calling ahead.
