The Southeast Ohio History Center in Athens preserves and shares the unique history and culture of Southeast Ohio through rotating exhibits and family-friendly activities. Visitors explore exhibits such as primitive rug hooking and the Ohio Settlement, which examines the region's early history through the lens of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The center offers expert guided tours, including historic walking tours of uptown Athens and the Athens Asylum. Programming includes hands-on classes like making penny rugs inspired by designs from 1840 to the present, taught by local experts. The center maintains a genealogy center and library for research. The museum is housed in a historic building in uptown Athens, within walking distance of Ohio University, restaurants, and theaters. Tickets are sold online through the venue's website. The center opens Wednesday through Friday and Saturday afternoons, with the genealogy center and library operating select days.
