About Rivers of Steel: Bost Building National Historic Landmark

Rivers of Steel: Bost Building National Historic Landmark opened in 2002 as the Visitors' Center for the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Built in 1892 as a hotel for steel workers, the three-story red brick building stood at the center of the Homestead Lockout and Strike, one of American labor history's most dramatic episodes. During the summer of 1892, union officials used the third floor as a watchtower to monitor mill activities and the Monongahela River, while newspaper correspondents filed stories from the building. Visitors explore permanent exhibits on the U.S. Steel Homestead Works and the 1892 strike, as well as temporary exhibitions drawn from Rivers of Steel's extensive archival collection of art, artifacts, documents, photographs, and audio-visual materials. The building also serves as a ticketing center for tours of the Carrie Blast Furnaces and the Explorer riverboat. A museum shop offers regional history books, cast iron artworks, and merchandise. General admission is free.
