About Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village
Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village in Avella is a National Historic Landmark where visitors take daily one-hour tours of a massive rock overhang used 19,000 years ago by prehistoric hunters and gatherers. The site features three interpretive villages spanning 500 years of regional history. At the 16th-century Eastern Woodland Indian Village, visitors explore a wigwam and test aim with a spear thrower. The 18th-century area includes a log cabin and open-sided trading post. At the 19th-century Historic Village, a blacksmith forges red-hot iron and visitors can take lessons in a one-room schoolhouse. A day-long visit suits families and history enthusiasts.
