About River Museum

River Museum preserves the history of the Ohio River and river transportation along a 39-acre park in Chilo, Ohio. Housed in the former operations building of U.S. Lock and Dam No. 34, the museum tells the story of the lock system completed in 1925, the community of Army Corps of Engineers employees and their families who lived there, and historic events including the Great Flood of 1937. The lock operated until decommissioning in 1964. Visitors explore exhibits about steamboats, navigation history, and the people who worked and lived along the river. Beyond the museum building itself, the park offers scenic river views, a riverwalk, picnic areas with shelters, and direct river access. Two yurts are available for overnight stays by qualifying youth and civic groups. A visit suits anyone interested in local history, Ohio River heritage, or a combination of museum exploration and riverside recreation.
