About Lord Higel House
The Lord-Higel House is a two-story Queen Anne Victorian residence built in 1896 by entrepreneur Joseph Lord on his 90-acre citrus grove. Visitors tour the restored historic house to learn about early settlement in the region and the lives of the Lord and Higel families who occupied it. George Higel managed Lord's orange grove and raised five children in the house while also writing a weekly column for the Sarasota newspaper. The property includes an accessory building with an ADA-approved bathroom and access ramp. Venice Heritage volunteers restored the house to its original condition after the City of Venice acquired it in 2005. The restoration project involved thousands of volunteer hours and community funding. The house stands on Granada Avenue in Venice, Florida, and offers residents and visitors insight into what life was like at the turn of the twentieth century.
