About Illinois Route 66 Experience at Illinois State Fairground
The Illinois Route 66 Experience at Illinois State Fairgrounds is a self-guided educational exhibit celebrating Route 66 history across more than 90 Illinois communities from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge in Madison. Visitors explore vintage billboards, a drive-in movie theater replica, and Legends Neon Sign Park featuring authentic glass neon signs crafted at a local Springfield manufacturing facility. The exhibit includes tributes to muffler men that once lined the highway. The experience operates daily from approximately 8am to 8pm and general admission is free. Located at Gate 2 on the corner of Route 66 and Sangamon Avenue in Springfield, the exhibit can also be entered north of the site near the Fire Station off Peoria Road. The project was designed to educate visitors about Route 66 history, revive interest in road trips, and highlight the communities along this iconic highway.
