About Hayward Area Historical Society
The Hayward Area Historical Society connects people, experiences, and stories through exhibits, collections, and community programs in Hayward, California. Visitors can explore local history online by searching the society's collections or attend events such as Brushes and Brunch, a creative activity program. The HAHS Art Gallery features rotating exhibitions, including displays of student artwork from Hayward-area elementary schools. The society organizes community events including the Day of the Dead celebration and a photo contest called Show Us Your Hayward. At Meek Mansion, the society's historic property, visitors enjoy self-guided tours of the first floor or participate in guided tours available on select dates. The mansion, built in 1869, reflects the Italianate architectural style and stands on grounds that once encompassed three thousand acres of agricultural land including cherry, apricot, plum, and almond orchards. The estate showcases the history of William Meek, a pioneer of commercial agriculture in Alameda County and early community leader.
