About Gammon House

The Gammon House Underground Railroad Museum in Springfield, Ohio tells the stories of courage and resilience through the lens of a rare historic property. Built before the Civil War by George Gammon, a free Black man, the house is one of only a few restored Underground Railroad sites in Ohio that was Black-owned and the only one of its kind in the region. Visitors take guided tours of the actual home where seven children were raised while the family helped people escape to freedom. The museum hosts Juneteenth celebrations and school programs that explore Black heritage and the Underground Railroad's role in American history. Tours run on the first Saturday of the month, with group reservations available by request. An Interpretive Center is being developed to expand educational and cultural programming for the community while preserving this significant landmark of Black history.
