About Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County

The Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County in Chowchilla showcases 15,000 fossils excavated from the Fairmead landfill, one of North America's largest middle-Pleistocene fossil sites. Visitors explore exhibits featuring remains of mammoth, smilodon, sloth, dire wolf, camel, and horse from 780,000 years ago. The center, operated in partnership with the San Joaquin Valley Paleontology Foundation, displays these specimens because few sites from this time period exist in California and the western United States with such species diversity. The museum offers a mock dig activity alongside its main exhibits. Educational programs and field trips are available for groups. The center also features the Mammoth Orange, a historic refreshment stand that was a Highway 99 landmark, currently undergoing restoration. The facility operates as a museum dedicated to paleontology and regional natural history.
