About Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society

The Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society Museum in Mount Pleasant preserves the history of the Southern Piedmont through 30 themed rooms filled with artifacts, photographs, and documents. Visitors explore donated items ranging from old farm tools and vintage clothing to antique toys and military memorabilia spanning from the Civil War to the present. The museum building itself, constructed between 1853 and 1855, originally operated as a school for young men under various names including the Western Carolina Male Academy and North Carolina College. A second building, Society Hall, opened in 2013 and houses a library of books, documents, and photographs relating to eastern Cabarrus County history and families. The museum is open Saturdays and welcomes group tours on other days by arrangement. The library is open Mondays for genealogical and historical research. The society also sponsors special exhibits, open houses, and community programs on diverse historical topics.
