About Devils River State Natural Area

Devils River State Natural Area encompasses over 37,000 acres across two units in Val Verde County near Del Rio, featuring one of Texas's most pristine spring-fed rivers. Visitors kayak the clear, remote Devils River through scenic canyons and rugged ridges, or swim and fish from the riverbanks. On land, hikers explore the brushy, remote terrain while carrying binoculars to spot wildlife among wildflowers like prickly pear. The natural area offers paddle-in campsites for extended kayaking trips, though only experienced paddlers with at least three days of supplies should attempt down-river journeys. Photographers and sketch artists capture the landscape, particularly during golden hour. Visitors must pack in all supplies including water and pack out all trash. A half-mile hike from the parking lot leads to the river at the Del Norte Unit, requiring visitors to carry all gear. Extended paddling trips require a Devils River Access Permit. Reservations are mandatory before visiting.
