About Whitehead Memorial Museum

Whitehead Memorial Museum preserves the history of Del Rio and Val Verde County through exhibits and educational programs housed in a historic stone building that was Del Rio's first two-story structure, built around 1870 as a general store. Visitors explore displays covering the region's early settlement, diverse cultures, and natural and social sciences. The museum grounds include the graves of Judge Roy Bean and his son Sam Bean, maintained for safekeeping. The Perry Mercantile building offers additional exhibits on the grounds. Children participate in coloring sheets and junior museum guides. The museum offers guided or self-guided tours and student group programs for educational visits. Special events include Dino Days, Living History Day, Dia de los Muertos celebrations, and Christmas programming. Handicap access is available near the Perry Mercantile entrance.
