The Museum of Western Art in Kerrville preserves and displays Western heritage through paintings, sculptures, and artifacts depicting cowboys, Native Americans, settlers, and frontier life. Visitors walk through galleries housed in a 14,000-square-foot facility designed by architect O'Neil Ford, featuring distinctive architectural elements including 23 bovedas, mesquite wood floors, and limestone walls. Heroic bronze sculptures dot the exterior grounds. The museum presents temporary exhibitions of work by contemporary Western artists alongside pieces by historical masters, with themed displays exploring famous ranches and other aspects of Western history. The Griff Carnes Research Center provides a 6,000-volume library of Western art and history materials for educators, students, and researchers. An outdoor pavilion hosts art education programs and events. Located in the Texas Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, the museum serves families, students, and history enthusiasts exploring authentic representations of Western life in both historical and contemporary contexts.
