About D R Barker Museum

D R Barker Museum is housed inside the Darwin R. Barker Library in Fredonia and preserves the history of Northern Chautauqua County with special emphasis on Fredonia and the Town of Pomfret. Visitors explore archives and access two research libraries while viewing rotating exhibits that interpret the people, events, and stories of the region's past. The museum grew from the Barker family homestead, built in 1821 and donated to the community in 1882 by philanthropist Darwin R. Barker, who had made his fortune in the Pettit's Eye Salve business. The institution developed from earlier efforts to create a community reading room, officially incorporated as a public library in 1883. Admission is free. The museum engages visitors through programs, exhibitions, tours, and demonstrations designed to connect them with local history. The location serves as a longstanding cultural center in Fredonia, New York.
