About Catawba Riverkeeper Floating Classroom
The Catawba Riverkeeper Floating Classroom is a 12-by-40-foot commercial boat that carries up to 30 passengers on educational tours of Lake Norman, the largest lake in North Carolina's Catawba River Basin. Visitors board at Stutts Marina in Mooresville and spend two hours exploring the water with equipment including microscopes, water quality monitoring tools, and binoculars. The organization offers field trips for students in grades K-12, with lessons tailored to grade-level standards covering water quality, ecology, wildlife, and environmental stewardship. Homeschool and flexible learning groups can join scheduled programs, and the Floating Classroom hosts free monthly tours for US veterans. Public watershed science sunset tours allow families and friends to learn about the river ecosystem during evening excursions. Field trips run Monday through Friday, available in morning and afternoon time slots.
