Buena Vista Lagoon Nature Center, located in Oceanside adjacent to the 220-acre Buena Vista Lagoon Ecological Reserve, features a 3,500 square foot facility with interpretive displays about local wildlife, a natural history library, and a gift shop. The center hosts monthly evening programs covering topics such as butterfly migration, tropical birding, and local raptors, along with special events including the Birdhouse Auction, Endangered Species Day Open House, and Nature Summer Camp. A quarter-mile nature trail loops through the preserve, showcasing native plants and habitats maintained by volunteers. Visitors can use a smartphone-friendly interactive mapping program to identify plants and key features along the trail. The nature center was built in 1987 and renovated in 2014 with the addition of a second-story view deck. The facility houses meeting rooms and maintains an extensive library of nature literature, slides, and video tapes available to the public.
