About Brig Matthew Turner

Brig Matthew Turner is a traditional wooden tall ship operated by Call of the Sea as an experiential learning platform for Bay Area youth in Sausalito, California. The brigantine, designed after the historic ship Galilee built by Matthew Turner in the late 1800s, serves as a floating classroom for on-the-water environmental field trips. The vessel measures 132 feet overall with a 100-foot deck, 25-foot beam, and 100-foot main mast. Its sail area spans 7,200 square feet across eleven sails. The ship features thirty-eight berths for voyaging and was constructed using hardwood and bronze fastenings. Two 200-kilowatt electric motors and two 265-kilowatt bio-fuel generators power the vessel, supported by lithium battery banks. Student groups participate in structured environmental education programs aboard the tall ship, engaging in hands-on learning about marine ecosystems and maritime history during voyages from the Sausalito pier.
