About Border Heritage Museum

The Border Heritage Museum occupies a restored two-story Italianate-style brick building in Laredo constructed in the early twentieth century, once home to merchant families in the historic San Agustin District. Located on the Rio Grande near San Agustin Cathedral and Plaza, visitors explore the region's history, culture, industry, and populations through changing exhibits, outdoor movies, and educational seminars. The museum hosts guided tours for school-age children and adults, presenting local history and preservation topics to schools, civic organizations, and international visitors. The restored Gonzalez Montemayor home at the center of the museum tells a story of resilience after years of abandonment. General admission is free. The museum operates Tuesday through Saturday with published hours available by phone or online.
