About Arnot Art Museum

Arnot Art Museum occupies a landmark neo-classical mansion built in 1833 in downtown Elmira. Visitors climb the wide front steps, pass under four columns, and enter the historic Arnot family home to view European paintings from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, American art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and collections of Asian and Egyptian artifacts. The museum displays the Matthias H. Arnot Collection on permanent exhibition in the Picture Gallery added in the 1880s. Rotating exhibitions feature selections from the permanent collection alongside works borrowed from museums worldwide. An audio introduction in the Picture Gallery covers the Arnot family history and the museum's founding. Visitors may sketch in the galleries using pencil only and can arrange guided tours in advance. The fully accessible museum welcomes all backgrounds and experience levels.
