About African American Museum of the Arts, Inc

The African American Museum of the Arts in DeLand displays works by established and emerging African American artists in a revolving gallery space. The museum also houses a permanent collection of more than 150 artifacts, including sculptures and masks from African countries. Visitors explore exhibits celebrating African American and Caribbean American art and culture. The museum supports the DeLand Black Heritage Trail, a self-guided walking and cycling route connecting local heritage sites, including the museum's Dr. Noble "Thin Man" Watts amphitheater and Moses Sun mural dedicated to jazz. Founded in 1994, the museum also operates the Little Theater of DeLand, where children and adults develop dramatic abilities through performance. Staff members research the history of Spring Hill, the neighborhood where the museum stands, for publication. General admission is free. The museum is located in historic DeLand, the seat of Volusia County Government, and remains the only museum in the area devoted primarily to African American cultures and art.
