The African American Museum of Dallas celebrates the heritage and achievements of African Americans through exhibitions and cultural programming. Currently on view is Mandela: The Official Exhibition, an immersive experience featuring four distinct gallery spaces that trace Nelson Mandela's life from his rural South African childhood through his twenty-seven years in prison to his election as the nation's first Black president and lasting legacy. The exhibition displays personal artifacts and possessions from the Mandela family alongside never-before-seen objects and powerful multimedia presentations. Visitors typically spend sixty to ninety minutes moving through the galleries, which are fully wheelchair accessible with subtitled film content. The museum, located at Fair Park in Dallas, welcomes families with children eleven and older, though younger visitors accompanied by adults are permitted. Photography is allowed throughout most of the exhibition. The experience is emotionally powerful and some content may be intense for younger visitors.
Admission is free. The venue says: “Admission | FREE — No tickets required”
Hours: Open: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday Closed: Sunday and Monday
