About Waukegan History Museum at the Carnegie

The Waukegan History Museum at the Carnegie occupies a beautifully restored historic Carnegie Library in downtown Waukegan. Visitors explore the expansive permanent exhibit "The Waukegan Chronicles," which traces the city's history from the ice age through the 21st century in both English and Spanish. A restored room displays the personal book collection of author Ray Bradbury, a Waukegan native who spent childhood hours there developing his passion for reading and storytelling. The museum houses the Waukegan Historical Society's extensive research archives and presents rotating temporary exhibits throughout the year. Educational programs serve visitors of all ages. The building itself, designated a Waukegan Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, opened in 1903 as one of 2,509 libraries worldwide funded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. Expert preservation architects led the meticulous restoration and adaptive reuse that transformed the long-vacant library into this vibrant community museum.
