About Underground Gold Miners Museum
Underground Gold Miners Museum tells the story of California's underground gold mining heritage through exhibits and artifacts from Alleghany's famous Sixteen to One Mine. Visitors explore gold and quartz slabs, cabochon gemstones, and historic carbide lamps on permanent display, occasionally lit to demonstrate their function. The museum presents both the human and geological dimensions of mining history, connecting the lives and experiences of miners to the geological forces that created the mineral-rich fault zones beneath California. Historic photography and immersive exhibits reveal the challenges and triumphs of miners who worked deep underground in pursuit of gold, documenting their grit, ingenuity, and determination. The gift shop offers mining-related items for purchase. The museum is located in Alleghany, California, in the same building as the post office on Main Street.
