About Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum
The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Nevada City preserves local transportation history through exhibits of railroad and aviation artifacts, photographs, and documents. Visitors take docent-led historical tours of the museum, rail yard, and restoration shop. The main gallery displays Engine 5, an 1875 Baldwin locomotive that hauled lumber and passengers for the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad before later serving as a movie engine at Universal Studios in Hollywood. The rail yard contains a collection of wooden rail cars, some fully restored and others undergoing work in the restoration shop, where volunteers regularly perform rolling stock maintenance and other restoration projects. The gift shop offers railroad-themed books, toys, gifts, clothing, and collectibles for visitors of all ages interested in railroad history.

Admission is free. The venue says: “There is no charge for admission to the museum. Donations are welcome.”
