About Western Pacific Railroad Museum
The Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola features hands-on railroad history centered on vintage diesel locomotives and historic rail cars. Visitors explore museum grounds with train cars and can take summer weekend train rides from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The museum offers the distinctive experience of operating a real diesel locomotive, where guests take the throttle themselves in one of the vintage engines. The rolling stock collection includes a 60-foot Cyrogenic refrigerated rail car donated by the Simplot Company, which used patented CO2 refrigeration technology to transport frozen food products and now serves as archival storage. The museum operates Thursday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Located in Portola, California, the attraction sits about an hour from Reno and Tahoe.
