About Plumas County Museum

The Plumas County Museum in Quincy operates as a living museum showcasing the region's history. Permanent displays feature an outstanding collection of baskets woven by the area's original Mountain Maidu Indians. The Industrial History Wing presents exhibits on railroads, gold mining on the Feather River, and timber production. The Exhibit Yard displays equipment used by Plumas pioneers, including a sleigh, horse-drawn hearse, water wagon, hydraulic mining monitors, logging equipment, a working blacksmith shop, a stamp mill, and a restored gold miner's log cabin. The Stella Fay Miller Mezzanine Gallery features contemporary cultural displays by county artisans. An archival library houses official county records, vintage photographs, documents, and literature. The museum bookstore sells regional historical books, note cards, postcards, calendars, prints, and locally mined gold nugget jewelry. A fully restored 1878 Variel Home stands behind the museum and opens on weekends and by appointment.
