Truckee Tahoe Soaring Association, known as Soar Truckee, operates a premier gliderport at Truckee Tahoe Airport where visitors experience scenic glider flights in engine-free aircraft. Gliders are quiet, efficient flying machines where passengers enjoy peaceful flight with only the variometer audio and wind sounds. The facility offers professional glider instruction for those learning to pilot these sleek aircraft themselves. Youth STEM aviation programs introduce students to hands-on flight experiences and aviation education. Experienced pilots can pursue cross-country soaring adventures spanning hundreds of miles or climb mountain wave thermals reaching altitudes up to eighteen thousand feet. Some gliders equipped with motors provide additional capabilities. The organization also provides aerotow services supporting the private glider pilot community. As a nonprofit established in 2015, Soar Truckee focuses on advancing soaring flight, safety, and aviation education while preserving this organized aviation activity that has operated at the airport since the early nineteen sixties.
