About Thomsen Observatory
Thomsen Observatory, founded by Southwestern Adventist University in 1984, invites visitors to observe the night sky through a 10-inch refractor telescope. The observatory offers two viewing methods: eyepiece viewing for direct observation and astrophotography for capturing celestial images. Star parties occur on the first and third Friday nights of each month, beginning about a half hour after sundown. Visitors should arrive prepared for outdoor evening conditions, bringing warm clothing appropriate to the season, insect repellent during warm months, and a lawn chair for comfort during waits. Viewing sessions typically last an hour or longer when conditions are optimal. The clearer air that comes with cooling temperatures in the evening enhances viewing quality. Located in Cleburne, Texas, Thomsen Observatory welcomes community members and astronomy enthusiasts of all experience levels to experience celestial observation.
