About The Sensory Garden

The Sensory Garden is a walled garden at Pacific House Adobe in Monterey, developed by the daughters of David Jacks as a historic landscape. Visitors explore this beautiful garden setting, which serves as the backdrop for the annual Merienda celebration of Monterey's birthday. The Pacific House itself houses a museum of California history, featuring the Holman Collection of American Indian artifacts donated to the State and a costume exhibit maintained by the Monterey History and Art Association. The two-story adobe, built in 1847 by Scottish-born architect David Wright, originally served as a hotel for seafaring men and later housed courtrooms, law offices, a newspaper, and a church. The property became a unit of Monterey State Historic Park. The Visitor Center is operated by California Heritage Guides and welcomes guests exploring this significant historical site located at Custom House Plaza.
