The Tennessee River Museum, housed in a historic 1939 post office building in downtown Savannah, displays one-of-a-kind artifacts detailing the unique history of the Tennessee River Valley. Visitors tour educational exhibits spanning from pre-historic life through the Civil War era. The Paleontology section features over 200 fossil specimens dating back millions of years. Archaeology exhibits explore the lives of native societies that originally populated the region. The museum traces the Trail of Tears and the Cherokee Nation's removal, examines the Tennessee River's role during the Civil War, and documents the Golden Age of Steamboats. Additional exhibits cover pioneer life, early river crossings by ferry boat, musseling operations that produced pearl buttons, and the establishment of Shiloh National Military Park. A museum shop offers handmade dolls, locally harvested honey, books, collectible items, and toys. The museum operates Monday through Saturday mornings through late afternoon, and Sunday afternoons.
Hours: Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
