About Tehachapi Depot Museum

The Tehachapi Depot Museum occupies a restored Southern Pacific railroad station built in 1904 at the summit of Tehachapi Pass. Visitors explore exhibits about the engineers, workers, and locomotives that conquered the region's steep terrain. The depot building itself serves as the museum's largest artifact, rebuilt by the community after a fire and restored to its original appearance. Inside, the self-guided tour moves through the restored 1904 station featuring exhibits on the Tehachapi Loop, an engineering marvel completed in 1876 that spirals around a central hill, allowing trains to gain 77 feet of elevation. The museum displays artifacts, photographs, and oral histories from telegraphers, brakemen, and depot agents who worked the line. Volunteer docents offer free guided tours by appointment and are available during public visiting hours. The location sits in historic downtown Tehachapi near cafés and shops, with accessible step-free entry and ADA-compliant restrooms. A typical visit requires 45 to 90 minutes.
