About Sumner County Museum
The Sumner County Museum in Gallatin preserves and interprets the region's rich history through exhibits, educational programming, and special events. Founded in 1975 by local history enthusiasts John Garrott and Robert Ramsey, the museum collects and displays artifacts connected to Sumner County's past. Visitors explore exhibits that cover the area's heritage, including connections to traditional country music and the region's Revolutionary War-era stories. The museum hosts the annual Cemetery Tour, where costumed interpreters share firsthand accounts of notable figures buried in Gallatin City Cemetery. Educational programming and special exhibits help make local history accessible and engaging for a broad audience. The museum also partners with community organizations on projects like a recent album celebrating the Possum Hunters, the first string band to perform on the Grand Ole Opry in 1925. The museum is located behind historic Trousdale Place on West Main Street and charges admission.
