About Route History

Route History is a museum in Springfield that uses virtual reality to educate visitors about Black communities along Route 66 during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras. Visitors come to the museum in person and put on an Oculus headset to begin their experience. After selecting a character and cities to explore, visitors sit back for a twenty-minute immersive virtual journey. The experience covers two cities and a sundown town, with options including Chicago, Joliet, Bloomington, Springfield, Brooklyn, and East St. Louis. Throughout the virtual experience, visitors learn about historic Black people, businesses, and events that shaped these Route 66 communities. The museum suits anyone interested in learning about this significant period of American history and the contributions of Black-owned businesses and leaders along this iconic highway.
