Pickering Hill Farms is a 6,000 square foot market in Avon where visitors select from fresh produce grown on-site or nearby. The farm grows sweet corn in bicolor and white varieties, along with tomatoes, peppers, kale, Swiss chard, herbs, apples in multiple varieties, and seasonal items including watermelons, cantaloupes, raspberries, squash, beans, and pumpkins. The market also stocks apple cider, pickles, gourds, Indian corn, and Halloween decorations. During fall festivities, visitors take complimentary wagon rides to a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and navigate a one-acre corn maze. Pickering Hill Farms traces its history to the mid-1800s when Jack Pickering arrived from England to establish a ranch and meat business; his son Frank expanded into vegetable farming and opened the original market on the current site in the 1930s. The family farm now operates across two locations: the ancestral 12-acre plot in Avon on an ancient Lake Erie beach with sandy soil ideal for delicate fruits, and a 50-acre property in Grafton Township farther south.
