About Phelps Mansion Museum

The Phelps Mansion Museum in Binghamton preserves a Second Empire home built in 1870 for Sherman David Phelps, a local entrepreneur and former mayor. Designed by renowned 19th-century architect Isaac G. Perry, the mansion stands as the only remaining structure from what was once known as "Mansion Row" on Court Street. Visitors explore rooms featuring Italian marble floors, black walnut staircases, period lighting fixtures, and 14-foot ceilings. The museum hosts rotating events including flashlight tours that explore the mansion after dusk, candlelit tours examining death and mourning in the 19th century, psychic fair weekends with mediums and readers, and cultural performances such as tango lessons. The building served as home to the Monday Afternoon Club, a private women's organization focused on education and philanthropy, from 1905 onward. The Phelps Mansion Museum operates in downtown Binghamton as a cultural institution dedicated to preserving local art, history, and heritage.
