About Old Courthouse Heritage Museum

The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, housed in the Historic Citrus County Courthouse built in 1912, offers visitors three permanent exhibitions exploring 12,000 years of Citrus County and Florida history on its first floor. The current temporary exhibit, Florida Foodways, highlights the history of food in the community from indigenous peoples and pioneers to the present day, featuring items on loan from local pioneer families. The museum also features online exhibits including Chassahowitzka Springs: Florida's History Revealed, an interactive digital experience exploring Florida's geological and human history, and Making a Way Out of No Way, documenting black education in Citrus County during segregation. Visitors can tour the beautifully restored courtroom on the second floor. The building itself represents four distinct architectural styles and sits at a 45-degree angle on the downtown square, with each of its four doorways aligned to a compass point. The museum is fully accessible with an ADA-compliant ramp and elevator. Located in historic downtown Inverness, the museum serves researchers, school groups, and history enthusiasts.
