About Okefenokee Heritage Center

The Okefenokee Heritage Center in Waycross is a nonprofit cultural arts museum and train museum spanning sixteen acres of pine woodlands. Visitors explore exhibits documenting the region's history and cultures. The main building houses the Founder's Hall Exhibit, the "Let Us Sing" Sacred Harp Exhibit, the Gram Parsons Exhibit, a Native American Exhibit outlining successive cultures in the Okefenokee region, and "From These Roots," a Black Heritage Exhibit documenting African-American contributions. The Okefenokee Chief Train Museum, the center's anchor exhibit, features a Train Office Exhibit and Model Train Exhibit that attract train enthusiasts. The grounds include the Waycross Journal Herald Newspaper Exhibit and the Hilliard House, the oldest standing home in Ware County. A rotating exhibit room and fine art gallery continually display current work. The center hosts community events, art guild meetings, line dance classes, and performances. The Heritage Center serves eight counties and suits visitors interested in regional history, Native American culture, and the arts.
