About Museum of the Southeast American Indian

The Museum of the Southeast American Indian at UNCP in Pembroke explores the history and culture of Indigenous communities across the southeastern United States. Visitors examine American Indian artifacts and art while learning about the artistry, resilience and innovation of Southeastern Native peoples. The Discovery Center serves as a hub for engagement with exhibits including Life by the River and the Battle of Hayes Pond, along with the Pinecone Patchwork Quilt on display. The museum presents more than twenty programs and events annually that celebrate Indigenous storytelling, tradition and education. The 9|9 Native South Art Show highlights the region's Native artists working in pottery, paintings, beadwork and other media. Educational programs and multimedia resources help visitors connect with native cultures. Since its founding in 1979, the museum has served as a vital center for sharing Indigenous heritage across the region.
