About Martin Walton House

The Dr. Martin Walton House is a historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places that welcomes visitors for daytime tours in Springfield, Tennessee. Operated by professional historians and history students, the museum preserves the stories of ordinary rural families from the 1800s rather than focusing solely on famous Americans. Visitors tour rooms dedicated to different family members and periods, including the Walton Room, which displays Dr. Martin Walton's Revolutionary War service records and those of his father John Walton, who served at Valley Forge. An upstairs room honors Meredith Walton and his descendants, featuring family photographs and period furniture. The house belonged to two family lines from 1809 to 2019, with its architecture and exhibits revealing details about the Walton, Gorham, and Cook families who lived there. General admission is free. A cemetery on neighboring property contains family graves and has been carefully restored using safe preservation practices.
