About Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum
The Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum preserves Bellevue's railroad heritage through vintage, life-size trains and historic exhibits. Visitors explore locomotives in both steam and diesel, freight and passenger cars, and cabooses displayed on the museum grounds. The collection honors the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad, Ohio's first chartered railroad, and the Nickel Plate Road, which made Bellevue a major rail hub in the late 1800s. A walking tour guides guests through displays including the historic Bellevue Station and its interior, switchboard equipment, and railway postal service artifacts. The museum also features scale model trains and crossing signs from various rail lines. Located south of downtown Bellevue, the museum opened in 1976 as a bicentennial project founded by local railroad enthusiasts.
