About Knight Foundry
Knight Foundry in Sutter Creek is North America's last water-powered foundry and machine shop, established in 1873 by Samuel Knight. Visitors tour the original historic machinery and equipment still in place, including the water-driven impulse wheel, line shafts, and belt drives that powered operations for 123 years. The blacksmith shop forge and the foundry's complete industrial system remain preserved and unchanged from the Gold Rush era. Public tour days occur on second and fourth Saturdays, with knowledgeable volunteers guiding visitors through the facility. The site holds designation as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, a California Registered Historical Landmark, and appears on the National Register of Historic Places. Knight Foundry serves as an educational resource for understanding Amador County's industrial heritage alongside nearby Kennedy Mine and other historic sites.
