About Knight Foundry

Knight Foundry in Sutter Creek is America's last water-powered foundry and machine shop, established in 1873 by Samuel Knight. Visitors tour the facility to see historic equipment and machinery preserved in its original Gold Rush-era context, including precision equipment once used for hard-rock gold mining and impulse turbine systems that powered hydroelectric plants across California. The foundry also produced lights for San Francisco and other industrial equipment that helped build the state. Designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark and California Registered Historical Landmark, the facility appears on the National Register of Historic Places. Volunteer tour guides lead visitors through the site and explain the machinery and Amador County's industrial heritage. Knight Foundry serves as an educational resource connected to other regional mining sites including the Kennedy Mine and Central Eureka Mine. The museum welcomes visitors interested in Gold Rush history, industrial heritage, and engineering technology.
