About Historic Murals of San Angelo

Historic Murals of San Angelo showcases large-scale painted murals throughout downtown San Angelo that depict the region's history. Visitors walk the streets to view and photograph these artworks created by artists Stylle Read and Crystal Goodman. The Chadbourne Street Mural, measuring 85 feet wide by 14 feet high, depicts an early 1900s streetcar and automobile accident, showing the evolution from horse-drawn wagons to mechanized transportation. It includes detailed renderings of historic businesses from that period, including the J.S. Lochabay barber shop, Cunningham tailor shop, and Star and Arc Light saloons. A three-panel military mural features Historic Fort Concho, San Angelo Army Air Field, and Goodfellow Air Force Base, with commemorative bricks honoring veterans. The murals use potassium silicate mineral paint imported from Germany, the same durable material used on European murals since the 1800s.
