About Great Circle Earthworks and Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Great Circle Earthworks is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Heath, Ohio, featuring one of the largest geometric enclosures built by the Hopewell culture. The earthwork spans nearly 1,200 feet in diameter and encloses almost 30 acres. Visitors walk through a monumental gateway nearly 200 feet wide to enter the circle's interior, where walls between 8 and 13 feet high surround a ditch of equal depth that once held water. At the center stands Eagle Mound, a large symmetrical mound named for its winged shape. The park includes two restored segments of perimeter walls from the broader Newark Earthworks complex. An Ohio History Connection visitor center near the gateway provides context about the site's archaeology and artifacts. The museum and visitor center are open Wednesday through Sunday, with general admission free. Park grounds are open from dawn until dusk.
