Flint Ridge Ancient Quarries & Nature Preserve invites visitors to hike trails across a 533-acre preserve and explore ancient pits left by American Indians who quarried flint here. The rainbow-colored flint was shaped into tools, weapons and trade items through a process called knapping. The museum features exhibits about Ohio's official gemstone and demonstrates how indigenous peoples worked flint into implements. Visitors can examine ancient quarry pits and workshop sites scattered across the ridge top, evidence of the "Great Indian Quarry of Ohio." The preserve provides a picnic area with tables, grills, drinking water and restrooms. Programs for school groups include a museum tour, nature hike, flint knapping demonstrations and atlatl throwing, allowing students to explore the tools and daily lives of Ohio's indigenous peoples. Located in Heath, Ohio, the grounds and trail system remain open during daylight hours for self-guided exploration.
